The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah
In 1974, thirteen year-old Leni is caught the in the riptide of her parents’ stormy and passionate relationship. After losing his job, her father abruptly moves all of them to the vast wilderness of Alaska where they celebrate the wild expanse and support from the local community that move into. But as the darkness of a long winter without sun approaches, each of them wrestles with extreme pangs of isolation and doubt. This is a study of human frailty and resilience against the backdrop of the great danger and immense beauty of Alaska.
The 1501 Ellinwood Street library building is the realization of a longheld dream of the library board, staff and community partners. Located in the heart of downtown Des Plaines, the four story, 82,000 square foot building represents the community's commitment to reading, lifelong learning, and a center for family activities. A grand central staircase and large windows provide a wealth of natural light and illuminate the building at night.
