From the day it opened in 1865, the Union Stock Yard was a must see attraction, drawing more than half a million visitors each year. Families, dignitaries, even school groups all made trips to the South Side to tour the Union Stock Yard where they got a first hand look at the city's industrial prowess. The Union Stock Yard operated for 106 years, helping Chicago become known as "hog butcher for the world" and the center of the American meatpacking industry for decades.
Dominic Pacyga received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has authored, or co-authored, six books concerning Chicago's history including Slaughterhouse: Chicago's Union Stock Yard (2015).
